Education

CTS supports U of M students with internships and other opportunities to launch their professional journeys. We offer continuing education and training for current workers to unlock potential for themselves and their employers. And we conduct camps and other programs to attract K-12 students to degrees and careers in transportation. Highlights from FY25 follow.

Eight 2024 Roads Scholar grads holding their certificates

Record-breaking class of 2024 Road Scholars is largest yet

Eighty transportation professionals from local government agencies and related organizations earned certificates through the Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (MnLTAP)’s Roads Scholar Program in 2024—the largest class to date. These new graduates received MnLTAP's Maintenance Operations and Technical Certificate and/or Leadership, Supervisory, and Operations Management Certificate. Check out these profiles and meet some of the grads.

2025 Airports Conference promotes career opportunities for aviation students 

The Minnesota Airports Conference opened its doors to students from Minnesota State University–Mankato’s Aviation Management program in 2025, offering them a unique opportunity to engage with industry professionals and gain real-world insights into their field. The conference, held each April and facilitated by the Airport Technical Assistance Program, helped students envision their place in the aviation industry and take clear steps toward their professional futures.

Summer campers get wide-ranging intro to transportation

Thirty middle school students learned about aviation, connected and automated vehicles, bridges, and public works during an immersive two weeks at CTS’s ninth annual National Summer Transportation Institute in July 2024. The free program encourages students to engage with STEM and aims to attract them to transportation-related education and careers. Field trip locations included MSP International Airport, Metro Transit facilities, the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory, and a job site and sign shop with Hennepin County public works staff
