Sample-Based Estimation of Bicycle-Miles of Travel

Principal Investigator(s):

Gary Davis, Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

This chief aim of this project is to estimate bicycle-miles of travel (BMT) on a bicycle network in the Twin Cities Region. This will be accomplished by (1) constructing a network representation of a system of bicycle routes using a geographic information system, (2) selecting a random sample of links from this network, (3) counting bicycle traffic volumes on his sample of links and (4) computing estimates of BMT using methods developed by the FHWA for estimating vehicle-miles of travel.
