MMUCC MNCrash Updates

Summary

In 2016, Minnesota deployed a state-of-the art electronic crash reporting system to all law enforcement officers across the state. The updated crash report was created with the officer in mind through an extensive usability and design project led by the HumanFIRST Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. The new report included new elements from MMUCC 4 not previously included in the legacy report, and streamlined the process to be more intuitive and shift responsibility from the officer to the system whenever possible. The outcome of the work was a report that has high user satisfaction with more timely, complete, and accurate data reporting. The main objective of this work was to update MNCrash to be in greater alignment with MMUCC 6th edition and still meet the high standards of user-centered design that the original MNCrash deployment included. The team of human factors specialists worked with the state's Crash Data Users Group (CDUG) to select new elements to include in MNCrash, develop solutions to reduce the burdens of data entry on law enforcement officers, and iteratively user-test potential designs to integrate them into MNCrash.
