Establishment of Native Sedge Vegetation in Created Wetlands

Project summary:

The MnDOT is required by the Wetlands Conservation Act to mitigate for wetland loss. At this time there is very little information on sedge meadow wetland restoration and creation, particularly with regard to introduction of sedge meadow vegetation. This study will determine the propagation techniques that promote seed germination and seedling development of five species of native wetland sedges: C. comosa, C. lacustris, C. lasiocarpa, C. rostrata, and C. stricta. The study will specifically address seed storage conditions, seed pretreatments, seed and seedling response to water availability, and effectiveness of highly organic wetland soil (muck) as a topdressing in promoting germination and seedling survival. The results of this study may be used to develop fact sheets for field personal and performance specifications for use of sedge seeds and seedlings.
