David Kittelson has worked on improving performance and reducing emissions from engines for over 50 years. His research interests include sampling and characterization of ultrafine and nanoparticles from engines (both ground-based and aircraft), sustainable fuels, reducing fuel use and greenhouse emissions from transportation, development of advanced engine exhaust aftertreatment systems, and measurement of vehicle emissions using mobile platforms.

Kittelson earned his bachelor’s and master’s from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge, England in 1972.

He is a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Kittelson received the Smit Clean Air Award for 2020-2021.
