Vassilios Morellas's research interests are in the area of geometric image processing, machine learning, robotics and sensor integration to enhance automation of electromechanical systems. He is program director in the department of Computer Science & Engineering and executive director of the NSF Center for Safety Security and Rescue. Prior to his current position, he was a senior principle research scientist at Honeywell Laboratories where he developed technologies in the general areas of access control, security, and surveillance and biometrics with emphasis on the problem of tracking of people and vehicles across non-overlapping cameras. Past research experience also includes work on Intelligent Transformation Systems, where he developed innovative technologies to reduce run off the road accidents.

Morellas obtained his diploma degree in mechanical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, his MSME degree from Columbia University, and his PhD degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He publishes regularly in peer review conference proceedings and journals and has coauthored a book on camera programming.
