CTS Webinar: Sidewalk Nation — From Public Space to Local Practice

Sidewalks are some of our most familiar public spaces, but they serve a surprisingly complex range of uses and users. From walking and rolling to dining, gathering, commerce, and other activities, these shared spaces can also be the site of competing needs and priorities.

In this webinar, Michael Pollack, author of "Sidewalk Nation," will explore the many roles sidewalks play in our communities, the conflicts that can arise over their use, and the legal and regulatory systems that shape how they are managed. He will also discuss how cities, towns, and residents might rethink their approach to these important public spaces. 

Lillian Prybil, associate transportation planner with the City of Minneapolis, will offer a local perspective, reflecting on these issues through her work with parklets, street cafes, walking and rolling, and other public realm initiatives in Minneapolis. 

The webinar will conclude with a moderated discussion and audience Q&A. It is being held in conjunction with a CTS Transportation Planning and the Economy Council meeting.

Speakers

Michael Pollack is a professor of law and the associate dean for faculty development at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. He teaches and conducts research primarily in the areas of property law, state and local government law, land-use regulation, and administrative law to explore how local institutional decision-making and the public and private regulation of space affect people’s lives, wallets, health, satisfaction, and overall welfare. Prior to joining the Cardozo faculty in 2017, Pollack was a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and to Judge Janice Rogers Brown of the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, an attorney at the Department of Justice’s Federal Programs Branch in Washington, D.C., and a Bigelow Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School. 

Lillian Prybil is an associate transportation planner for the City of Minneapolis. Her work in the division of Transportation Planning and Programming spans a wide variety of project types, including the city’s mode shift marketing campaign, parklets and street cafes program, data and evaluation work, and the occasional preliminary street design project. The common thread between her projects is improving the experience for people in the many ways they move around the city — with an extra focus on walking and rolling.
