The Use of Fabrics to Reinforce Unsurfaced Roads

Principal Investigator(s):

Andrew Drescher, Former Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Co-Investigators:

  • David Newcomb, Former University Researcher, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

Numerical analyses will be performed to investigate the effect of reinforcing fabrics on the performance of low-volume roads. Attention will be focused on comparing performance of unsurfaced roads and roads with an overlying layer of asphalt concrete. In this way the benefits of using fabrics for road reinforcement will be critically assessed. Guidelines will be developed for selection of fabrics for reinforcement of low-volume roads. Field tests for validating the results of the analysis will be proposed.
