One of the biggest challenges in this project is the coupling between design and analysis. Analysis can only be made after some assumptions are determined on the system structure, and at the same time, appropriate assumptions on the system structure depend on the analysis results.
The main purpose of Phase III is to determine system parameters that are optimal from an economic point of view, and to construct a comprehensive computer animation of the electrical pipeline concept. To these ends, we first need to develop computer programs for faithful system simulations; building on the aerodynamic progress and understanding of linear electric motors in Phase II. Computer simulations essentially solve the dynamical equations that govern the pipeline system responses, given specified system parameters. Then, optimization analysis needs to be conducted to determine optimal blockage ratios, optimal capsule operating speeds in a steady state, and optimal electric motor spacing. These optimal choices will result in the most economical system operations. Finally, computer animation techniques will be used to demonstrate the detailed system design and system operations, and to provide an overall documentation of the project.
