Repair of Metal Culverts - Phase 2

Principal Investigator(s):

Cathy French, Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Co-Investigators:

  • Carol Shield, Former Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

The project is the second phase of research into the inspection and repair of metal culverts in Minnesota. In the first phase, several techniques for the location of voids and soft zones behind a corroded and deteriorated culvert were investigated. The planning for the instrumentation to monitor the performance of strengthening techniques was initiated. During the investigations, one of the culvert sections was found to be in such poor condition that urgent replacement was recommended. This has changed the scope of and planning for the research project. The second phase will now concentrate on evaluating the damaged culvert and its surrounding backfill as it is excavated for repair together with a reduced instrumentation plan for evaluating the sue of concrete in the strengthening work on the other culvert.
