Reassessment of Diametral Compression Test on Asphalt Concrete

Principal Investigator(s):

Co-Investigators:

  • David Newcomb, Former University Researcher, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

Existing elastic solutions for evaluating the resilient modulus and Poisson's ratio in the diametral compression (indirect tension) test on asphalt concrete will be reassessed. Viscoelastic solutions will be derived to determine the influence of load frequency and duration. An algorithm will be developed to evaluate the instantaneous and time dependent resilient moduli the research should clarify and explain the differences observed in resilient modulus determination, and provide the basis for improvements in testing methodologies.
