Project summary:
Safety and saving peoples' lives who use Minnesota's transportation systems is a major focus of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), US Department of Transportation (Federal Highway Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), and numerous private sector foundations and associations. Over the last 10 years, each has produced numerous strategic plans and campaigns to reduce the loss of life and improve the safety of Minnesota's transportation network. Programs of this nature are also prominent in the international arena in countries like Sweden and Australia. Many conferences have brought together parties of common interests to share program ideas and, in some cases, agree on limited programs of mutual interest. However, no comprehensive effort has been made to bring together all the parties to establish and connect a common agenda with agreed upon goals to make a major breakthrough, bring us to the next level of safety in Minnesota, and/or serve as a model for the nation. MnDOT and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety seek the support of the Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) at the University of Minnesota to host and coordinate a North Star Workshop "Connecting the Minnesota Safety Agenda" scheduled for June 2001. CTS staff will work with the designated working group to plan and carry out the workshop.
