Model Evaluation - Comparison of AIMSUN and VISSIM

Principal Investigator(s):

Panos Michalopoulos, Former Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

Over the years, many different simulation models have been developed for analyzing complex traffic problems. AIMSUN and VISSIM are two of the most popular micro-simulators and have been used by various transportation corporations and research units. The objective of this research was to evaluate and compare these two models for their potential applications in Mn/DOT. To achieve this objective, the first step in this research was to calibrate the two models up to an acceptable accuracy level on a test freeway. Subsequently, some features of interest were modeled in each simulator and their performance was evaluated and compared in terms of modeling accuracy and ease of use. In addition, training and learning curve, technical support, available resources materials, and cost per license were evaluated and compared. A grading scheme to reduce subjectivity in the evaluation process was also produced.
