Improving the Nodulation and Nitrogen (N2) Fixation of Prairie Legumes Used in Roadside Revegetation in Minnesota

Principal Investigator(s):

Peter Graham, Former Professor, Soil, Water & Climate

Project summary:

This study will emphasize the rhizobia associated with those species of legumes used in roadside revegetation, viz: Amorpha canescans; Astragalus canadensis; Chamaecrista fasciculata; Dalea (Petalostemum) purpurea and D. candida, Desmodium canadensis and Lespedeza capitata. For each of these legumes we will complete the collection, isolation, and maintenance of rhizobia from nature study areas and other environments, then use these strains in the selection of inoculant-quality rhizobia for each host. The project will also contrast different inoculation methodologies for fall and spring plantings of legumes, and determine which are most appropriate to roadside revegetation. Experience gained in these activities will be compiled into a manual for the establishment and inoculation of prairie legumes, and used to establish a website detailing our findings.
