I-494 Future Improvement Evaluation with Two Traffic Simulators

Principal Investigator(s):

Panos Michalopoulos, Former Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

The objective of this project was to determine the feasibility of implementing microscopic simulation for the evaluation of future freeway improvements in the Twin Cities. Mn/DOT is currently using a microscopic simulator that does not cover all the necessary complex geometries and is cumbersome to use. In this project a sample analysis, based on a current Mn/DOT project, was conducted with two advanced microscopic simulators. The result is a first stage evaluation of the alternative solutions these newer simulators provide for the problems the old one cannot handle.
