Development of Data Warehouse and Applications for Continuous Vehicle Class and Weigh-in-Motion Data

Principal Investigator(s):

Taek Kwon, Former Professor, UMD-Electrical Engineering

Project summary:

The Mn/DOT Office of Transportation Data & Analysis (TDA) manages 29 vehicle classification (VC) sites and 6 weigh-in-motion (WIM) sites, which are installed on various roadways in Minnesota. These numbers are expected to grow significantly. Considering the corresponding growth in the amount of data, an efficient data warehousing and management system is essential.

The goals of this project were to develop a VC/WIM data warehouse and to create example applications that could utilize it. This project was successfully completed. Its main contribution is that it provides a single access point for querying all of Mn/DOT's WIM and VC data, for which many applications can now be developed without concerns of proprietary binary formats.
