This research will extend preliminary work in which a hypothetical model of a "mid-block dart out" accident between a pedestrian and vehicle is used to relate several measures of accident risk to vehicle traffic volume and speed on a residential street. In particular, this research will (1) collect data on vehicle speeds and headways on a sample of residential streets in order to test the original models assumptions and change these if necessary; (2) develop computational methods which remove the original model?s need to treat important variables as fixed and known and (3) connect the original model to research on accident severity, allowing prediction of the risk of sever and fatal accidents to pedestrians.
