Determination of Optimum Time for Application of Surface Treatments to Asphalt Concrete Pavements

Principal Investigator(s):

Mihai Marasteanu, Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

One of the major tasks for any transportation agency?s pavement management system is to select the appropriate alternative for pavement rehabilitation and maintenance, whether preventive or corrective. While for classical pavement design the deterioration models are well established, for rehabilitation these models are less well understood due to the lack of performance data available and lack of understanding of the fundamental mechanisms related to various rehabilitation procedures. This work investigates current research in the area of surface treatments and proposes a detailed research plan for an in-depth evaluation of various surface treatments based on existing field experiments in Minnesota, to be carried out as part of a future phase of this investigation.
