This project involves an exploratory analysis of how to transfer a crash-modification factor estimated under one situation to other situations, which is likely to be more important as automated vehicles improve their capabilities and increase their market share. The basic idea is to use graphical models to describe the dependencies among a set of relevant variables in a crash mechanism and focus on (1) identifying sufficient conditions for taking causal information determined in one situation and applying to another, and (2) deriving expressions for computing the transferred quantities. Bareinboim and Pearl have developed analytic tools that could profitably be applied to this problem. This project explores the usefulness of Bareinboim and Pearl's tools by looking at how vehicle automation could impact the crash-reduction effects of two roadway-based countermeasures: (1) installation of pedestrian hybrid beacons at uncontrolled crosswalks, and (2) offsetting opposing left-turn lanes at signalized intersections.
