A special tribute edition of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering (CEGE) magazine celebrates Emeritus Professor Ted Galambos and Emeritus Professor Charles Fairhurst, who celebrated their 90th birthdays recently. Both men were instrumental in establishing CEGE and its reputation as a department of inspired and innovative engineering for society.

“Their commitment to students, the University, and the professional community have been remarkable,” writes CEGE department head Joe Labuz.

In the special issue, colleagues share insights about the duo’s work and impact.

Galambos, says CEGE professor Catherine French, “led the effort in establishing the structural engineering laboratory, now named in his honor, into one of the best anywhere.” The lab is a four-story space designed for modeling and testing large-scale structural components, including bridge beams.

Lawrence A. Kloiber, president and CEO of LeJeune Steel Co, adds that Galambos is considered the father of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). Galambos published the first edition of an LRFD guide in 1986. “The publication marked a paradigm shift in the structural steel design process,” Kloiber writes. Galambos’s research included projects for MnDOT that explored the behavior and reliability of steel curved girder bridges.

Fairhurst’s research interests included rock mechanics and fracture behavior, underground excavations, and design of underground structures.
