At the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) Statewide Conference on October 21, Nichole Morris was honored with the 2025 Kathy Swanson Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes leadership, vision, and lifelong dedication to reducing the number of traffic deaths and injuries resulting from crashes on Minnesota roads. Morris, a University of Minnesota (UMN) research associate professor and CTS scholar, has spent more than two decades leading research focused on the human factors that influence traffic safety.

“I really do have the best job in the world that allows me to take on interesting academic pursuits and do what I’ve always wanted to do for as long as I can remember—to help people live safer and healthier lives,” Morris said when accepting the award.

Since joining the UMN in 2011, and directing the Human Factors Safety Laboratory since 2017, Morris has led dozens of groundbreaking projects related to distracted driving, impaired driving, automated vehicles, and vulnerable road-user safety. She has also worked to connect the academic world with frontline law enforcement to ensure that research is grounded in real-world application and that practitioners have access to data-driven insights.

Additionally, Morris has directly served the Minnesota Legislature through her work leading a study on the disposition of traffic safety violations, further underscoring her trusted role as a thought leader in the state. Through her research, partnerships, and mentorship, she has significantly advanced the field of traffic safety in Minnesota.

Morris thanked her family and research team and acknowledged the many partnerships essential to the work she was recognized for, including the Center for Transportation Studies, the Minnesota Departments of Transportation and Public SafetyMinnesota Safety CouncilMinnesota State Patrol, the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and many more.

She also noted the heavy toll traffic crashes have had on many families, her own included. “[They] push me through this work and remind me that we cannot say we have reached our goal…until we have reached zero deaths on our roadways,” she said.
