John S. Adams, a dedicated scholar, esteemed professor, and valued member of the CTS community, passed away on November 19 after an extended illness.
Adams, an MA and PhD graduate of the University of Minnesota, joined the faculty in 1970. He taught geography, planning, and public affairs; served as the first director of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs from 1976 to 1979; and frequently collaborated with CTS, the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs, and the Minnesota Population Center.
Adams's contributions to urban and regional planning and transportation policy left a lasting impact on many students, colleagues, and policymakers. His passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and his commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of transportation’s role in shaping equitable and sustainable communities remain cornerstones of CTS's work.
To honor his legacy, CTS established the John S. Adams Award for Excellence in Transportation Research and Education in 2009. The annual award recognizes outstanding graduate students in the public policy and planning fields.
"We celebrate John’s life with his family, friends, and all those who were fortunate to learn from and work alongside him," says CTS deputy director Gina Baas. "His legacy of intellectual curiosity and public service will continue to inspire generations to come."
