CTS supports U of M students with internships and other opportunities to launch their professional journeys. We offer continuing education and training for current workers to unlock potential for themselves and their employers. And we conduct camps and other programs to attract K-12 students to degrees and careers in transportation. Highlights from FY26 follow.

'CTS at 40' shares stories of career development
Throughout 2026, CTS has highlighted the people, partners, projects, and programs that have provided four decades of impact across the transportation industry. We’ve shared the story of CTS through videos, including one featuring leaders past and present; a timeline of CTS milestones; and reflections from partners and former colleagues. These reflections underscore the impact that CTS has had on these professionals — and the impact they have had on CTS.
MnLTAP expands trainings for local agency professionals
The Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (MnLTAP) is all about improving the skills of transportation professionals at cities, counties, townships, and tribal nations. Over the past year, MnLTAP moved to dramatically expand its training program, welcoming new instructors and new students. More than 80 people have enrolled in the Civil Engineering Technician Level 1 certificate program; a Level 2 program including inspection, drafting, and leadership topics was launched; and a Level 3 program is under development. Other expanded on-site and online trainings cover topics such as traffic control, CAD, CDL, GIS, and inspection.
Student awardees shine at annual meeting
CTS recognized several University of Minnesota undergraduate and graduate students studying engineering and public policy at the 2026 CTS Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. Selected students are given $1,500 awards toward their studies and are invited to attend the May luncheon, where they are recognized by their advisors in front of hundreds of leading transportation professionals. Two graduate students were also honored for their participation on a project team recognized with the 2026 Robert C. Johns Research Partnership Award.
