Carol Shield's primary research interests are in the use of composite materials in the infrastructure, modeling and experimental investigation of the behavior of prestressed concrete structures, and methods of seismic simulation. Recent work has dealt with repair methods for bridges and the use of high-strength and self-consolidating concrete in the bridge industry. She is the Director of the Multi-Axial Subassemblage Testing System (MAST) lab, a new seismic testing facility at the University that opened in 2004.
Shield received bachelor's degrees in mathematics and engineering from Swarthmore College, a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in 1991. Before joining the University of Minnesota, she worked as a research engineer specializing in nondestructive evaluation and diagnostics at the United Technologies Research Center.
