Mike Shiffer, vice president of planning, strategy, and technology at TransLink, led a special opportunity to see how the Vancouver region’s transportation system connects with transit-supportive land use in one of the most livable regions in the world. Participants had the opportunity to experience a comprehensive regional network of major roads, ferries, buses (including North America’s largest fleet of electric trolley buses), commuter rail, and the world’s most extensive fully automated rapid transit network. Participants saw firsthand examples of mature transit-supportive developments as well as emerging clusters and some areas of opportunity throughout the region. There were examples of exceptional transport efficiency and others where the system is particularly strained. This is one of the few regional transportation systems in the world that is both modally and geographically comprehensive that has the authority to both fund and implement projects.
