2013 Career Expo

About the Event

More than 80 students seeking transportation-related career opportunities gathered at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on March 5 for the 2013 Transportation Career Expo. Attendees included students majoring in supply chain management, planning, logistics, marketing, and engineering.

The event included a keynote presentation on personal branding by Darren Kaltved, assistant director of career services at the U of M, who explained that a positive personal brand can help open the door to future career opportunities.

“A brand is a unique promise of value,” Kaltved said. “What can you do to make sure your brand is one of success? You have to think about this—employers want to know. Why you? What makes you unique?” His suggestions to students included being aware of their strengths and limitations, creating a personal branding statement, and networking with professionals in their field of interest.

Expo attendees also participated in interactive roundtable discussions with transportation professionals. Discussion topics included freight and logistics, engineering, policy and planning, social media for job seekers, and tips for landing an internship or first job.

Following the roundtable discussions, students networked with the expo’s 29 exhibiting employers and professional associations.

The annual expo was sponsored by Education and Outreach Council of the Center for Transportation Studies, the Women's Transportation Seminar, the Minnesota Local Road Research Board, Minnesota LTAP, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Institute, and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).
