CTS Student Awards

Matthew J. Huber Award

The Matthew J. Huber Award for Excellence in Transportation Research and Education is given to University of Minnesota graduate students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement in engineering, science, and technology fields. The award is named in honor of the late Professor Emeritus Matthew J. Huber in recognition of his long and valuable contribution to the teaching and study of transportation.

2012 Huber Award recipients:

  • Augusto Cannone Falchetto—doctoral candidate, Department of Civil Engineering. Advisors: Associate Professor Mihai Marasteanu and Assistant Professor Jia-Liang Le
  • David Bennett—master’s and doctoral candidate, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Advisor: Professor David Kittelson

TRB Travel Awards

As a part of an effort to support students in transportation, CTS and the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Institute provide funding for selected students to attend the national Transportation Research Board (TRB) annual meeting in Washington, D.C. held in January of each year.

Students selected will each receive up to $1,000 for conference expenses, including travel. Upon completion of the conference, students are required to submit brief summaries of sessions they attended.

Faculty will nominate students based upon the following criteria: transportation-related degrees/course work and internships completed, transportation research conducted, and transportation-related papers presented and/or published.

John S. Adams Award

The John S. Adams Award for Excellence in Transportation Research and Education is given to University of Minnesota graduate students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement in policy and planning fields. The award is named in honor of Professor Emeritus John S. Adams, a significant contributor to transportation-related research, education, and outreach activities and a long-time supporter of CTS.

2012 Adams Award recipients:

  • David Smith—doctoral candidate, Department of Applied Economics. Advisor: Professor Frances Homans
  • Qian Chen—dual master’s candidate, Humphrey School of Public Affairs and Department of Statistics. Advisor: Assistant Professor Yingling Fan

ITS Student of the Year Award

The Student of the Year award provides a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate student working on an ITS Institute-sponsored research project.
