Tracking Land Use Change in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Region

Tuesday, December 11, 2007
3:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m., CST

Mechanical Engineering Building, Room 1130
111 Church Street SE, Minneapolis
University of Minnesota Twin Cities - East Bank

This workshop will give an overview of recent work in developing methods to predict land use change for the Twin Cities region. Since this work is related to the larger “Access to Destinations” study, there will be some additional emphasis on the influence of transportation networks in shaping regional growth. Some historical background will be given on the ways that researchers have sought to understand and predict changes in urban land use. Then, we will proceed to describe several different methods that we have applied to the Twin Cities. These methods seek to capture a number of important aspects of land use change, such as neighborhood effects and historical dependence, and make use of a unique, cell-level land use data set developed for the Twin Cities, covering the years 1958 to 2005. Some conclusions will be drawn regarding the relative strengths and weaknesses of these methods in predicting future land use change.
