Investigation of the low-temperature fracture properties of three MnRoad asphalt mixtures

Principal Investigator:

Mihai Marasteanu, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering

Project Summary:

This study focuses on determining the properties of field mixtures from the MnROAD facility. Specifically, this study investigates the low-temperature fracture resistance properties of asphalt mixtures used in cells 33, 34, and 35 at MnROAD. In a previous project, mixtures were prepared in the lab using loose mix. In this project, cores cut from cells 33, 34, and 35 will be tested. This will allow to investigate the effects of aging with depth. In addition, the asphalt binders will be extracted and fracture testing will be performed on the binders to determine correlations with mixture properties.
