Preliminary Laboratory Investigation of a Commercial Enzyme Solution as a Soil Stabilizer

Principal Investigator:

Mihai Marasteanu, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering

Project Summary:

A number of commercial enzyme solution products were developed in the past years and the manufacturers, based on limited laboratory and field data, advertise significant benefits for stabilization of pavements subgrades and other soil stabilization applications. One of these products, Perma-Zyme, show a lot of promise for pavement related work in Minnesota. A preliminary laboratory study will investigate the benefits of this product with two types of subgrade materials. A preliminary chemical investigation of the product will be performed that includes the magnitude of product activity with time. A simple set of laboratory tests will be performed to investigate the benefits of this product. Another commercially available product will be used for comparison purposes. Mechanical properties will be evaluated at various times to better understand the stability of the product benefits with time.
