High Performance Spatial Visualization of Traffic Data

Principal Investigator:

Shashi Shekhar, Professor, Computer Science and Engineering

Project Summary:

We have completed the first three tasks for the project titled "High Performance Spatial Visualization of Traffic Data" during the time-period of March 2000 to December 2000. We met with researchers from Traffic Management Center to identify the goals. We identified the main performance bottlenecks to be the large size of the traffic datasets, which cannot fit inside main memories of common workstations. We have designed efficient algorithms for extracting visualization-relevant subset of the traffic data quickly. We plan to complete the last two tasks by the end of Sept. 2001 assuming the funding would be in place before the end of March 2001. We will implement a prototype software system to allow selection of subset of traffic dataset (e.g. by specific date or highway) to produce alternative visualizations interactively. We also plan to complete the project report.
