Mn/DOT presently has a Pavement Condition Reporting System (PCRS) that has been used for tracking and reporting weather circumstances that may affect the driving conditions. The system was designed based on a database server and customized front-end programs that allow easy data entry and retrieval. The drawback of this system was the employment of customized front-end programs that require modification of codes as the windows operating systems are updated to new versions. Moreover, modification of the front-end programs requires reinstallation of the codes in every client and server workstations in order for the Mn/DOT PCRS to work properly. In order to alleviate the problems associated with the customized front-end programs and to further allow the PCRS access from anywhere, Mn/DOT decided to implement a PCRS based on World Wide Web (web) technology. In this new approach, anybody having a standard web browser and password can access the PCRS for data entry and retrieval without installation of the customized front-end programs. This project is intended to develop such a web-based PCRS using the state-of-the-art web technologies.
