Project Summary:

In this Work Plan the Human Factors Research Laboratory (HFRL) proposes a project to validate HFRL's new wrap-around dynamic driving simulator. The purpose of this project is to show the extent to which we can infer real-world conclusions based on simulation findings. This project consists of four main parts. The first is a static description of the simulator, hardware, software, vehicle dynamics (equations of motion), vehicle sensors, driving worlds, etc. The second part is a dynamic simulation of the component parts of a well studied but complex driving maneuver, the urban left turn. Various forcing functions will be used to increase the loading on the driver. Driving performance variables will be measured. The third part of the project is the development and application of an opinion survey questionnaire. This questionnaire will be given to all subjects in the simulation experiment as well as the subjects in the on-road validation. The fourth part of this project is the on-road validation of the simulation findings.
