Project Summary:

Our goal is to exploit sensing and control technologies in order to enhance the safety of both drivers and the public. One example of the importance of this is the drowsy driver and the potential for road departure accidents. The proposal describes the acquisition and system integration of a computer controlled vehicle testbed which will become an "open architecture" rapid prototyping system for research and evaluation of sensing and control technologies and the human factors issues associated with the interaction between the driver and the automation technology. Our purpose is not to "pick" one technology over another but to make sure we can objectively evaluate these technologies in light of their effect on future highway design, safety and potential regulatory legislation.
