This project aims to develop a robust, accessibility-based framework for evaluating the affordability of transportation. It will begin with a review of existing definitions and measurement methods for both accessibility and transportation affordability. The research team will develop an operational framework that integrates place-based accessibility measures with individual-based transportation affordability. Researchers will then demonstrate the effectiveness of the new framework by using it to evaluate the affordability of transportation in the Twin Cities. Descriptive statistics will be produced not only for the general Twin Cities population but also for specific population groups (for example, low-income workers, students and their families, seniors). In addition, researchers will use geospatial analysis to identify areas with a lack of affordable transportation. These findings may be used to design population-specific and location-enhanced solutions for increasing the affordability of transportation in the Twin Cities.
