Three national transportation leaders—Steve Lockwood, Lance Neumann, and Alan Pisarski—will participate in the program of "Access to Destinations: Rethinking the Transportation Future of our Region," a new conference scheduled for November 8–9 in Coffman Union on the Minneapolis campus. The University of Minnesota selected CTS to host this conference as part of President Robert Bruininks's 21st Century Interdisciplinary Conference Series.

The conference is intended to bring national experts together with Minnesota policymakers and professionals to address traffic congestion and land use challenges. Participants will explore current and new ways of evaluating transportation and land use policies, with a special focus on using accessibility measures.

After academic experts have presented new ways of looking at transportation and land use challenges (see conference program), the public portion of the conference will close with a working lunch featuring Lockwood, Neumann, and Pisarski. Their remarks will focus on two main topics: the implications of the research on the current state of practice in transportation and land use planning, and the potential impacts on policy directions.

Each brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this discussion. Lockwood is currently vice president of PB Consult and a longtime thinker and leader in national transportation policy initiatives. He has served as senior policy officer with the Federal Highway Administration and authored the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) report, The Changing State DOT.

Neumann is currently president of Cambridge Systematics, a leading national consulting firm, and has chaired many national Transportation Research Board studies and committees, including the planning committee for a national conference this August on transportation performance measures.

Pisarski is the author of the widely read book Commuting in America and has conducted extensive research that has provided a basis for federal transportation policy initiatives by AASHTO and others.
