Richard P. Braun and Barbara Lukermann
CTS presented the following awards at its annual meeting and awards ceremony April 17:
Mn/DOT commissioner and CTS Executive Committee member Elwyn Tinklenberg presented the Distinguished Public Leadership Award to Peter McLaughlin, Hennepin County commissioner. McLaughlin's leadership role was crucial in helping secure funding for the Hiawatha light-rail transit line. In accepting the award he credited the University for providing the advanced knowledge that helps leaders decide "where we make our investments and where our future will be."
Richard P. Braun, the founding director of CTS, presented the award named in his honor to Barbara Lukermann, senior fellow in the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. Her research has focused on land development, metro planning, and the links between land use, housing, and transportation policy. She noted that "being given the award in honor of Dick Braun is an honor in itself."
Gene Ofstead, retired assistant Mn/DOT commissioner, received the Ray L. Lappegaard Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his leadership in advancing transportation policy and emerging ideas through his activities at state and national levels. He noted how Lappegaard was an innovator, and encouraged the audience to continue in his tradition.
The Matthew J. Huber Award for Excellence in Transportation Research and Education was given to two students, Julie Cidel, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Geography under Professor John Adams, and Seshasai Kanchi, a graduate research assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering nominated by David Levinson.
The CTS Research Partnership Award was presented to Dr. Taek Kwon of the University of Minnesota, Duluth; and Roberta Dwyer, Ed Fleege, and Curt Pape of Mn/DOT. Their award is for several specific projects involving the development of monitoring and communication tools for weather and road conditions.
Two other projects received special partnership recognition. The first was "Linking Light-Rail Transit to the City," with partners Mary Vogel, Lance Neckar, and Aaron Mikonowicz of the University's Department of Landscape Architecture; John Kari and Karen Lyons of the Met Council; Monique MacKenzie of the city of Minneapolis; Garneth Peterson of BRW; and Michael Schadauer of Mn/DOT. The second project was "Trade Centers of Minnesota," with partners including the late Tom Anding of the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA); Barbara Lukermann; William Casey (formerly of CURA); and Abby McKenzie, Cecil Selness, and Cathy Gillaspy of Mn/DOT.
