Ms. Spanhake is currently the Assistant Director of Program and Financial Management at the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies. In this position she directs budget development, account monitoring, financial reporting, and contract coordination processes for all Center programs; directs the center's administrative, human resources, and operations functions; leads the Center’s efforts in developing and implementing strategic systems used to carry out our business; and directs efforts to formalize agreements on new opportunities and programs.

Prior to her work with the University, Dawn was a project manager and structural engineer at HNTB where she participated in the design of bridges and tunnels, performed construction inspection, and provided CADD training throughout the firm. Dawn holds a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota and is a registered professional engineer in Minnesota.

Dawn is a member of the Transportation Research Board committee on women's issues and transportation.

Dawn is also active in the University of Minnesota Alumni Association and is a past president of the University's Institute of Technology Alumni Society (ITAS).  She is also a member of Women's Transportation Seminar, where she has chaired national committees and has held several positions on the Minnesota chapter board of directors.  Previously, Dawn served on the ITS Minnesota board, and was awarded the ITS Minnesota achievement award in 2005.
