Vogel's CTS research projects

Mary Vogel is in many ways the public face of the landscape architecture department. She is perhaps best known for her work in the fields of design for personal safety and corridor design for public transit. Her safety research, in collaboration with the Saint Paul Planning and Economic Development Department, led to the publication of the handbook Design for Saint Paul Public Safety: A Guide for Making a Safer Public Realm. Its principles are now regularly incorporated in Saint Paul's major developments, and it is used by many other cities as well. In the area of corridor design, her work has emphasized land use as a critical component of transportation management.

Vogel received her M. Arch. from the University of Minnesota before shifting to the field of landscape architecture. She is a member (with CTS Faculty Scholar Lance Neckar) of the City RE/Designing Team, which has been investigating transportation systems, environmental concerns, recreational opportunities, economic development strategies, and neighborhood stabilization.
