Marshall's CTS research projects
Julian Marshall's research interests involve energy, air pollution, and environmental health impacts of transportation systems. Specific topics include models and simulations of people's exposure to air pollution; comparing air pollution exposures among racial and socioeconomic subpopulations; air quality and health impacts of urban planning; and, the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in modeling air pollution. Additional areas of active research include: sustainability engineering; energy and environment; and environmental impacts of development, especially in rapidly-developing Asian economies.
Marshall received a BSE degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to his faculty appointment in Civil Engineering, Marshall is an affiliated member of the University of Minnesota's Mechanical Engineering Department, the Environmental Health Sciences division of the School of Public Health, and Urban and Regional Planning program of the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, as well as the School of Environment and Health at the University of British Columbia, Canada.
