Recent Advances in Integrated Urban Modeling at the University of Toronto

Speaker: Eric J. Miller, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Toronto

1:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m. CDT, Room 1130, Mechanical Engineering Building

This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the ILUTE (Integrated Land Use, Transportation, Environment) model system under development at the University of Toronto. ILUTE is a multiagent, comprehensive microsimulation model of urban socioeconomic processes. These processes include:

  • Population demographics
  • Residential location choice
  • Firm demographics and location choice (at the moment not fully implemented)
  • Labor market participation
  • Auto ownership
  • Daily activity/travel
  • Housing and commercial floorspace supply
  • Mobile source emissions (pollution and greenhouse gases)

The current model study area is the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA). The model operates on a 100-percent sample of synthesized agents for the GTHA. A 1986 base-year population of agents has been synthesized from census data for model system testing.

After a brief introduction to the overall ILUTE system, the presentation will focus on recent work undertaken within the ILUTE project, consisting of new models of: agent synthesis, demographic updating, residential housing market clearing, activity/travel, and road vehicle emissions and dispersion.

Seminars also will be broadcast live on the Web and available for later viewing. A reminder will be sent prior to each seminar with details about the Webcast. See the webinar viewing instructions for more information.
