September 30

In conjunction with the CTS Transportation Infrastructure Research Council Meeting

Intelligent Compaction Implementation

Speakers: Joe Labuz [bio]
Professor, Department of Civil Engineering

Bojan Guzina [bio]
Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering

John Siekmeier [bio]
Senior Research Engineer, Minnesota Department of Transportation

3:30–4:30 p.m., Rm 1130, Mechanical Engineering Building, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis [map]

This seminar will provide an overview of intelligent compaction (IC) and highlight the performance of IC at four construction sites in Minnesota. The speakers will discuss their recent qualitative assessment of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's IC specifications, which included recommendations to improve the specifications and procedures.

IC is considered an attractive approach to evaluate compaction quality because it involves continuous and instantaneous evaluation of the soil through machine-drive power or drum vibration monitoring. Modern IC devices also have an integrated global positioning system to provide a complete GIS-based record of the earthwork site.
