University of Minnesota

Carlson School of Management

Departmental undergraduate scholarships are offered once a year in the spring, typically in February or March. Notifications are sent by e-mail or students can call the Advising office at 624-3313 for more details.

The Carlson School awards fellowships and scholarships on the basis of academic merit. The Carlson School automatically reviews all applications for the Dean's and Associate's Fellow Scholarships. Students do not need to complete a special application for these scholarships, but are urged to apply by the December 15 deadline. All other fellowships and scholarships require an application and essay. Please review individual descriptions at the Carlson School Web site for specific application requirements. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is February 15.

For further information contact CSOM at 624-0006.

Department of Civil Engineering

Departmental undergraduate scholarships are offered once a year at the end of February. Notifications are sent by e-mail and posted in the Civil Engineering building.

Graduate student financial aid is available in the form of fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships, to both U.S. and international students. You are encouraged to apply about nine months before your planned start of study. For example, support for fall entry is awarded beginning in January.

To receive full consideration for the fellowship competition, applications should be submitted by December 31. Please note that students applying for the Master of Civil Engineering degree (MCE) are not typically awarded financial aid.

For further information call the Civil Engineering Department at 625-5522 or stop by CE 122.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering distributes scholarships primarily to juniors and seniors. To be considered for these scholarships please contact ECE Undergraduate Student Support at 612-625-4327 or office EE/CSci 4-174.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

There are several scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year available for outstanding Upper Division M.E. students. Graduation should not be prior to spring semester 2006. Forms to be completed are available in Room 1120 MechE. Deadline to apply is in early May 2005.

Three types of financial support are available for graduate students: fellowships, research assistantships (RAs) and teaching assistantships (TAs). In general these forms of support provide a regular stipend, waiver of all or part of tuition and fees, and a health insurance and benefit package. All students who apply by the December 15 deadline will automatically be considered, on a competitive basis, for pre-awards (i.e., awards offered in advance of a student's enrollment) of financial support, often through a combination of fellowship and assistantship. Students who enroll without a pre-award are still eligible for research and/or teaching assistantships, which can be obtained at any time during one's academic program.

For further information go to me.umn.edu or call 625-2009.

Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs

The Humphrey Institute offers merit-based financial aid in the form of scholarships, fellowships, and research assistantships. Most Humphrey Institute financial aid is available only to applicants pursuing the MPP, MS, and MURP degrees. Most awards require full-time enrollment.

Applications for merit-based aid must be postmarked by January 5 to receive full consideration. In addition to the merit-based financial awards, a substantial number of students in all degree programs secure research or teaching assistant positions for ten to twenty hours a week.

For further information contact the Humphrey Institute at 626-7229.

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

The Graduate Fellowship Program of the National Academies engages graduate and postdoctoral students in science and technology policy. As a result, students in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, business, and law develop essential skills different from those attained in academia, which will help them make the transition from being a graduate student to a professional.

Applications are now being accepted for the three 10-week sessions in winter, summer and fall in 2007. Graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research within the last 5 years are eligible to apply. Submit applications by November 1 for the winter program, March 1 for the summer program, and June 1 for the fall program. Questions should be directed to policyfellows@nas.edu.
