Context Sensitive Design for Local Governments

This workshop provides transportation practitioners with the tools needed to develop projects that better balance safety and mobility with community and environmental goals. The principles and benefits of Context Sensitive Design will be discussed with an emphasis on finding flexibility in roadway design standards. The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to apply the principles of Context Sensitive Design through working case studies. Examples of successful built projects will be provided, and concerns about capacity, safety, and tort liability will be discussed. The curriculum will be based on Mn/DOT's six principles of Context Sensitive Design:

  • Balance safety, mobility, community and environmental goals in all projects
  • Involve the public and affected agencies early and continuously
  • Address all modes of travel
  • Use an interdisciplinary team tailored to project needs
  • Apply flexibility inherent in design standards
  • Incorporate aesthetics as an integral part of good design
