

CTS is a catalyst for transportation innovation, providing services in research, education, and outreach as described in the CTS mission. It coordinates the University’s transportation research program, strengthens education programs for practitioners and students, and conducts outreach through events, publications, and library services.
In addition to these services, CTS performs the following research implementation services for transportation-related organizations:
Transportation involves many types of people, and CTS uses many tools to reach them. CTS delivers high-quality print and electronic newsletters, event proceedings, and other materials to thousands of readers each year, and maintains more than a dozen program Web sites. Services include writing and editing; graphic design and layout; logo and graphic identity development; project management and planning; Web information architecture; usability analysis; photography.

Since its inception, CTS has recognized the importance of bringing people together to discuss transportation issues. The experienced staff plans and manages hundreds of conferences, forums, and workshops every year. Services include customer needs assessment; planning and design; budgeting and financial reporting; marketing and promotion; registration and logistics; evaluation and record keeping.

Transportation is a complex field, and workforce development is essential. CTS works with government agencies to create and deliver customized workshops for agency staff, building on the ongoing training provided by the Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program. Topics range from public involvement to project management to technical topics such as truck-weight compliance. Services include curriculum development, marketing, course development, and course evaluation.

For research to make a difference, it has to be transferred to and understood by practitioners in the field. CTS uses a number of approaches to put research and innovations into practice. Services include creating user manuals and DVDs, designing Web pages, and developing new course curricula and workshops.

Innovation doesn’t just happen: it takes skilled management to chart a new course, formalize relationships, or conduct operations. In its role as neutral convenor and program manager, CTS brings diverse parties to the table to seek new opportunities, strengthen existing programs, and provide oversight for new activities. Services include strategic planning, research coordination, proposal development, program administration, and outreach development.
